Cyber Crime Conference Helping Authorities Solve Crime In Digital Age

For decades, police could only use old gumshoe and physical evidence to solve most crimes. Then the laboratory breakthrough of DNA evidence was added to the detective’s arsenals. But it was only in the mid-2000s that police forensics entered the digital age, ushering in a new era as fingerprints turned electronic.....

To help other agencies tap into the growing and useful technology, Microsoft and the Anoka County Attorney’s Office are holding a two-day Cyber Crime and Computer Forensics Conference, at Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Coon Rapids.......

Anoka County Attorney Tony Palumbo said the conference will give investigators and prosecutors the tools to track the electronic trail of evidence left by criminals.
Through evidence like cell phone text messages, dialed and missed calls, computer emails, web pages and GPS (global positioning satellite) tracking, investigators can often find irrefutable evidence that’s crucial to proving a case. The benefits of such evidence were recently demonstrated in the high-profile criminal cases of Amy Senser, Tom Petters and Denny Hecker.
If stored electronic data is crucial to solving a crime, Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit can often give investigators what they need to find it...........

Cybercrime golden age over in two years?

The golden age of cybercrime could come to a close as soon as 2014, according to Kaspersky Lab founder Eugene Kaspersky — as long as the world changes how it coordinates on creating laws to govern the internet.

Kaspersky slammed the traditional model of regulation for technology and cybercrime, criticising it of being slow and unsuitable. He compared it to writing a book on emerging security issues (which he had been approached to do, but deemed it as being impossible)...........
This doesn't mean that Kaspersky doesn't support regulation. Rather, he said that the world needs to do it in a smarter way. Instead of having governance for the internet fragmented across different geographies, which then causes chaos among different governments as they attempt to reconcile definitions and intents of individual pieces of legislation, Kaspersky said that moving the governance model to a unified body makes more sense.
"I think that finally we will have all these regulations and powers in place in 2014, [or] 2015 perhaps. I think that will be [the] end of the cybercrime golden age" he said.
His reasoning for this date is that Interpol will have completed its dedicated Command and Coordination Centre in Singapore by then...............
However, he acknowledged that there is an inherent danger involved in anyone having too much regulatory power, or responding to issues with disproportionate legislation...........

Cyber spies exploiting Java, Flash flaws

Cyber spies have planted Java- and Flash-exploiting malware on Web sites focused on human rights, defense and foreign policy.
Over the last two weeks, the Shadowserver Foundation, a nonprofit group that tracks Internet threats, has discovered several such compromised Web sites that download the malware through visitors' browsers. The malware, which exploits known flaws in Adobe Flash and Java, is aimed at Mac and Windows systems...........
Such targeted attacks have become a major problem for corporations, particularly those within the defense industry or manufacturing. In its 2011 annual security report, network equipment maker Cisco found that cyber criminals were moving from large-scale attacks using spam to working for organizations that pay handsomely for electronic documents stolen from particular international corporations and law firms, government agencies and research organizations.....
In the latest attacks, the malware opens up a backdoor in infected systems, in order to receive commands from a control server located in a remote location. The server also receives stolen data..........

DarkMarket - cyberthieves, cybercops and you

The internet has become a way of life for many of us – we talk online, bank online, buy online, but do we know about the dark side?

And there is one – hackers, crackers, rippers, men with strange nicknames and virtually their own language skimming pin numbers off credit cards, organising cyber attacks via enslaved BotNet computers … we’re at war and we don’t even know it.

This is the story of the rise and fall of DarkMarket, a website devoted to furthering cybercrime. Its forums put buyers and sellers of stolen financial details on the same page, its administrators ran an escrow system, making sure that players could do deals without being ripped off...............

Who are they, these super-smart criminals with names like Matrix001, RedBrigade, Script, Boa, JiLsi, Iceman, Master Splyntr, Cha0, Lord Cyric and others?

They live in the virtual world of the internet – the valley of lies – hiding behind their security systems and avatars.  The vast majority are men. Often they are dysfunctional teenagers. They hail from Germany, the Ukraine, Turkey, UK, US, France … they are almost impossible to trace.

DarkMarket, which was closed down in 2008 when the law enforcement agencies got too close, was primarily a carders site – all the illegal means of milking credit cards, but Glenny also touches on cyber industrial espionage and cyber warfare, the scams and spams. It is fascinating and required reading in our highly competitive, fast-paced, digital and globalised world.

And cybercrime is still out there, constantly morphing to meet new challenges and usually at least one step ahead of law enforcement. Today the proliferation of mobi and apps offers fresh opportunities.............

Web should remain without regulation: Vint Cerf

In a very short period of time the internet has had a profound impact on the way we live. Since the Internet was made operational in 1983, it has lowered both the costs of communication and the barriers to creative expression. It has challenged old business models and enabled new ones. It has provided access to information on a scale never before achievable.
.......
It would be foolish not to acknowledge that the openness of the internet has had a price. Security is an increasingly important issue and cannot be ignored. If there is an area of vital research and development for the internet, this is one of them. I am increasingly confident, however, that techniques and practices exist to make the internet safer and more secure while retaining its essentially open quality.

Cybercrime in Canada said to be skyrocketing

Canada ranks 2nd in world for phishing sites.

The number of Canadian servers being targeted by hackers has increased sharply, according to an IT security company that compares cybercrime rates around the world.........
Hackers are taking advantage of Canada’s “squeaky clean” cyber reputation, which may no longer be as well-deserved as many believe.
A growing number of malicious sites are hosted on Canada's internet service providers, allowing criminals to carry out cyber attacks on Canadian and international users.
Canada's increase in cybercrime is part of a worldwide trend. Despite the sharp spike in numbers, Canada ranks sixth in the world, the same position it held during last year's study............

Dissecting impact of social media

As social networking websites and blogs are increasingly competing with other media outlets, educating and empowering young people to become critical thinkers are crucial for ensuring a smooth transition from traditional media to new media.

This has been affirmed by media experts during the first session of the 11th Arab Media Forum which started in Dubai on Tuesday. The panellists talked about the steep rise in social media penetration that has brought in an era of multi-faceted journalism.

The workshop examined the possibility for media to participate in the cultural development of young people, improve their overall awareness, power of discretion and capacity for evaluating and selecting newsworthy content. With the large young population utilising social media for the exchange of information, the fear is that they will lose sight of their values as well as the ethics of journalism....................

Four Irish, British suspects helped Stratfor hack: US

U.S. federal prosecutors said four Irish and British men charged in a crackdown on the international hacking group Anonymous also helped breach the security analysis company Stratfor last year.
In an indictment made public on Wednesday, Manhattan federal prosecutors said the four men, previously charged in March, were part of the "Antisec" faction of Anonymous that disclosed in December that it had hacked into Strategic Forecasting Inc, or Stratfor.
Stratfor is dubbed a "shadow CIA" because it gathers non-classified intelligence on international crises.
Until Wednesday, only 27-year old Chicago hacker Jeremy Hammond had been formally charged with the Stratfor breach............

Taliban website hacked as Afghan cyber war heats up

Hackers have for the third time in less than a year crippled the main website of the Afghan Taliban, with a Taliban spokesman on Friday blaming Western intelligence agencies amid an intensifying cyber war with the insurgents.
The unidentified hackers broke into the Taliban's El Emara website twice on Thursday, replacing usual insurgent victory messages with images of executions and support for the Afghan government and security forces in English, Arabic and Pashto.
The Taliban have in recent months waged an intensifying information war with NATO forces in the country, distributing anti-government messages on mobile phone networks and using Twitter to claim largely improbable successes as most foreign combat troops look to leave the country by 2014.........

Russia says many states arming for cyber warfare

Russia has stepped up its campaign for a globally binding treaty on cyber security, warning that many states are acquiring cyber warfare capabilities that, if unleashed, could subvert economies and bring down critical infrastructure...........
"We won't use nuclear weapons - it is a Doomsday weapon. But when we have a situation where we have millions of hacker attacks on our money, on our private computers, it means that it is a new form, a new level of confrontation," said Andrey Krutskikh, Russia's recently appointed special coordinator on information technology in its foreign ministry.............
The Stuxnet computer worm that affected Iranian nuclear facilities in 2009-10 had done "enormous damage" and a wide range of critical infrastructure around the world could be a target for cyber attack too...........
Highly-publicised episodes, from the blocking of U.S. and British government websites by activist hacker groups Anonymous and LulzSec to this week's suspected cyber attack on Iran's main oil export terminal, have shown the vulnerabilities of the Internet.................

PH-China hacker wars may affect banks, telcos

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE 1) – An IT expert on Monday said critical services relying on the Internet may suffer from the escalating tension between alleged computer hackers from China and the Philippines.
Ivan John Uy, former chairman of the defunct Commission on Information and Communication Technology (CICT), said critical services like banking and telecommunications may suffer in case the cyber war between alleged hackers from China and the Philippines continues.
