US lawmakers look to ease penalties for Facebook fibbers

A tide of worry is sweeping America over the possible extension of anti-hacking legislation to cover anyone who makes a false statement on a social networking website.

The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986 was originally passed to tackle hackers – but it also contains an obscure clause which could mean that anything from supplying false information on Facebook, LinkedIn or similar sites, to violating an employer's restrictions on using computers and the internet could be punishable by prosecution.
